Background
An understanding of the disease processes that impair neurologic function depends critically on knowledge of basic neural science. Neuroscience education provides residents with a foundation that will allow them to read medical and scientific literature with greater understanding, prepare for board exams, understand opportunities for research, and care for patients in an increasingly complex scientific field of medicine.
Neuroscience is incorporated into many of the resident noon conferences. Additionally, many of the department wide conferences - neurology grand rounds, endowed/memorial lectures, neurology specialty rounds (e.g. movement disorder rounds, neuromuscular rounds), and complement the noon conference neuroscience curriculum.
The resources and environment for neuroscience education at Columbia University are extraordinary in both depth and breadth. This structured neuroscience curriculum takes advantage of these resources to create a program tailored specifically to the needs and schedules of neurology residents.

CUIMC has a detailed interactive on -line Neuroanatomy Atlas available for residents:http://www.columbia.edu/itc/hs/medical/neuroanatomy/neuroanat/
This project was developed by John H. Martin, Ph.D. and Ewa Soliz, M.S., M.A. at the Center for Neurobiology and Behavior, Columbia University. This is an unparalleled learning tool which guides the user through an interactive neuroanatomy program using state of the art imaging, pathologic specimens, and three dimensional illustrations. This program takes a minimum of 20 hours to complete in its entirety and is freely available to our residents.
