Required Child Psychiatry Rotation for Child Neurology Residents

Child neurology residents will be required to rotate for a total of 4 weeks with the Child Psychiatry Service.  This may be done either as a single 4 week block (preferred) or as two 2 week blocks as needed.  This rotation will include time with the consult liaison service, attendance at weekly inpatient discussion conferences as well as attendance at the Child Psychiatry Division Rounds and teaching lectures when they do not conflict with scheduled Child Neurology didactic lecture series or the resident’s weekly outpatient clinic. 

1.  Course goals and Objectives

Medical Knowledge:

  • Become familiar with common and uncommon psychiatric disorders of childhood, their presentation and management

Patient Care:

  • Direct patient care may or may not occur depending on volume of inpatient consult liaison service and is not a requirement for this rotation.

Practice Based Learning:

  • Observe the delivery of psychiatric care to the pediatric population
  • Work closely with Child Psychiatry Fellows
  • Understand the issues surrounding coordination of outpatient psychiatric follow up

Interpersonal Skills

  • Communicate effectively with Child Psychiatry Attendings, Fellows and Staff
  • When indicated communicate effectively with patients and their families
