Clinical Neurophysiology is an area of medicine in which selected neurological disorders are evaluated, monitored and treated using a combination of clinical assessment and electrophysiological testing. The field assesses derangements of normal physiology of the nervous system and uses electrophysiological methods to evaluate the abnormal physiological state.
Trainees in Clinical Neurophysiology at NewYork –Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia Campus) are graduates of accredited residency programs in neurology or child neurology. In applying to the program, and confirmed again upon acceptance into the program, trainees elect to major in either EEG/Epilepsy or EMG/Neuromuscular Diseases. The majority of their time is then devoted to acquiring extensive knowledge and expertise in one or the other of these broad areas. At the same time, they are exposed broadly to the field of clinical neurophysiology through actual experience, formal lectures, and observation.
