The objectives of the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Program reflect the intended outcome of the educational experience, as summarized in the following items. The evaluation method for each objective is provided.
The objectives of the Clinical Neurophysiology programs are:
- By the end of the Clinical Neurophysiology Program, trainees will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of the normal physiology and relevant anatomy of the nervous system; the normal and abnormal electrophysiology of the central and peripheral nervous system; and the electrophysiological procedures specifically related to common neurological disorders that affects nervous system functions such as epilepsy, neuromuscular diseases, demyelinating diseases, movement disorders, degenerative diseases, and conditions that alter mental function [MK].
- Trainees will be able to apply the technical skills to evaluate patients with neurophysiological disturbances [MK].
- Trainees will be able to apply the skills to use intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring to assist
neurological and orthopedic procedures [MK]. - Trainees will demonstrate competence in obtaining and documenting the neurological history, performing the neurological examination, and in making a comprehensive formulation and differential diagnosis, and developing plan for diagnosis and management [MK, CS].
- Trainees will possess the necessary clinical knowledge and skills for independent practice in clinical neurophysiology, reflecting the medical literature and standards of practice [MK,CS,PBLI].
- Trainees will demonstrate and exemplify effective communication with patients and their families, developing a therapeutic alliance, displaying empathy, professionalism, and sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic diversity [ICS, P].
- Trainees will develop and demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and effectively in multidisciplinary health care teams by interacting with other team members, communicating effectively, providing accurate and complete health care documentation, demonstrating appropriate teaching and leadership skills, and by interfacing with the internal [hospital-based] and external [community] systems and agencies of health care provision [SBP, P, ICS]
- In caring for patients and interacting with members of the health care team, trainees will demonstrate the many attributes of professionalism, including concern and respect for others, honesty and integrity, confidentiality, sensitivity to ethical issues, and awareness of safety [P, ICS].
- Trainees will demonstrate practice of improving patient care by using the medical literature, by reflecting on clinical outcomes, by acquiring the skills for critically assessing the literature, and by participating in research or scholarly projects [PBLI].
