Neurology Residency Program Goals and Objectives

Department of Neurology

The goals of post-graduate neurological education at Columbia represent a broad target of the institutional effort and its educational philosophy:

  1. To expose neurology residents to a wide spectrum of disorders of the nervous system in an educational environment that emphasizes clinical excellence, academic rigor, socioeconomic diversity, and collegiality.
  2. To prepare residents for the independent and ethical practice of clinical neurology by providing an educational experience that is upon supervised clinical work with increasing responsibilities for outpatients and inpatients.
  3. To provide a foundation of organized instruction in the basic and clinical neurosciences.
  4. To encourage the continued intellectual growth and the habit of lifelong study in residents through mentorship.
  5. To promote the future careers of residents by providing opportunities in all areas of neurological practice and research.
  6. To provide a comprehensive educational experience for trainees, based on the ACGME six core competencies:
    1. Medical knowledge
    2. Patient care
    3. Interpersonal and communication skills
    4. Practice-based learning and improvement
    5. Systems-based practice
    6. Professionalism
