Neuromuscular

Supervising Attending:

  • Dr. Christina Ulane and rotating attendings

Description:

The elective week in neuromuscular residents will be assigned to a variety of specialty clinics in the Neuromuscular Division. This may also include rotating through the MDA Clinic or the Multidisciplinary ALS Clinic.

Objectives:

  • Recognize when a patient has a neuromuscular disorder
  • Identify patterns of neuromuscular disease (ie anterior horn cell, nerve root, plexus, peripheral nerve, neuromuscular junction and muscle)
  • Diagnosis and manage common neuromuscular disorders
  • Identify uncommon and rare neuromuscular disorders
  • Identify and understand what are characteristics of neuromuscular disorder emergencies and need for referral for inpatient management
  • Interpret NCS/EMG studies
  • Recognize when tissue biopsy and genetic workup is indicated

Requirements:

  • Attend assigned clinics and see at least one new and one follow-up patient per session
  • While not required, this rotation provides the opportunity to complete your neuromuscular NEX evaluation

Schedule:

  • You are expected to attend the following conference during your week:
    • Muscle Rounds 4:30-5pm on NI-14
  • The rest of your weekly schedule will be organized by Dr. Ulane
