Description:
The elective week in neurooncology residents will be assigned to a variety of specialty clinics in the neuro-oncology Division. This week will provide exposure to neuro-oncological care in the outpatient setting.
Objectives:
- Recognize the clinical presentations of brain and spinal tumors and leptomeningeal disease
- Provide differential of brain and spinal tumors
- Identify radiographic and pathological features brain and spinal tumors
- Identify criteria for surgical and radiation intervention
- Learn basic principles of management of primary brain tumors including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and other medical therapies, and an up-to-date knowledge of agents in clinical research as applicable to Neuro-oncology.
- Learn basic principles of treatment of metastatic cancer to the nervous system including brain, spinal cord, leptomeningeal, epidural, plexus, peripheral nerve, and skull metastases
- Identify neurological complications of radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy regiments
- Gain skills for goal of care and breaking bad news discussions for neuro-oncological patients
- Learn basic principles in supportive and end-of life care and pain management of Neuro-oncology patients
Requirements:
- Attend assigned clinics and see at least one new and one follow-up patient per session
- While not required, this rotation provides the opportunity to complete your ambulatory NEX evaluation
Schedule:
- You are expected to attend the following conference during your week:
- CNS Mets Tumor Board (Wednesday 4pm-5pm via Zoom; contact Hannah-Cox Peralta for more information)
- Brain Tumor Board (Thursday 9:15am - 10:30pm PH via Zoom; contact Hannah-Cox Peralta for more information)
- The rest of your weekly schedule will be emailed to you by the Neuro-Oncology division the week before you start your elective. Contact Dr. Donovan for more details.
