Supervisory Lines of Responsibility for Residents

The vascular neurology resident serves under the supervision of the vascular neurology attending who is directly responsible for patient care for those patients with stroke who are assigned to or accepted on the vascular neurology portion of the neurology service, admitted to the neurological intensive care unit, or seen in consultation on other services.  Among the six vascular neurology attendings, responsibility is shared on a fixed scheduled rotation basis for the supervision of the emergency service, inpatient service, consult service, and outpatient clinics. The vascular neurology attendings are responsible to the Neurologist-in-Chief.

The vascular neurology resident reports to and reviews all patients with the vascular neurology attending. The inpatient service attending also reviews and is responsible for patients admitted through the emergency ward, and those with stroke admitted to the neurological intensive care unit.  Another vascular neurology attending supervises the consult service and yet another supervises the outpatient clinics.

The name and assignment dates are known in detail by the vascular neurology resident.

The vascular neurology resident in turn supervise the management of patients with the neurology residents and those rotations on the service from other departments (medicine, psychiatry, and neurological surgery).  The vascular neurology resident also participates in the teaching of medical students.

As a functioning physician, the vascular neurology resident interacts with the physician and surgeon consultants from other services involved in the care of stroke patients, as well as the nurse practitioners, general housing staff, social work staff, and any others who have a role in patient care.
